WELCOME TO THE DESERT OF THE MAMLUKS!

This site lets you experience and explore an extraordinary neighbourhood. With a documentary video, interactive 360-degree panoramic views, descriptions, and photo galleries, you will be able to feel what it’s like to visit the monuments of the Desert of the Mamluks in Cairo and to walk its lanes with the people who live there.

Unlike cemeteries in the West, the vast Muslim necropolis of Cairo, often referred to as the 'City of the Dead’, was always meant to be a place for the living as well. Rulers and dignitaries built not just tombs, but huge complexes with mosques, Sufi convents, various charities and elaborate service facilities, so many people worked and lived here. Nowadays, the Desert of the Mamluks is home to a numerous and lively community.

Enjoy your visit!
